Planning for Integrated Virtualization Manager

Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) enhances Virtual I/O Server with a simplified management interface for the PowerVM® Editions (APV) environment on the PS703 or PS704 blade server and other POWER7® platforms.

IVM owns all system resources that you can partition. IVM provides a robust set of partitioning functions for AIX® and Linux partitions, but this functionality is a subset of the Hardware Management Console (HMC), which runs on other POWER® platforms, but not on the PS703 or PS704 blade server.

Point your browser to the IVM Web-based administrative console to manage IVM LPARs remotely. The following tasks are among those that you can perform with the IVM console:
  • Logical partitioning configuration
  • Boot, start, and stop actions for individual partitions
  • Display of partition status
  • Management of virtual Ethernet
  • Management of virtual storage
  • Basic system management
  • Exporting the system configuration to a file
  • Importing a system configuration from an IVM on another PS703 or PS704 blade server

If you plan to run IBM® i operating system (formerly known as i5/OS™) on the PS703 or PS704 blade server, you must use PowerVM Editions to do so. Install IBM i as a client operating system in a logical partition. You cannot install IBM i in the PS703 or PS704 blade server unless you install it in an IVM-managed logical partition.
