Planning for PowerVM Editions

PowerVM® Editions Standard is a base hardware feature of your BladeCenter® PS703 or PS704 blade server. PowerVM Editions provides the virtualization capabilities of the blade server. PowerVM Editions includes the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) remote administrative console, the Virtual I/O Server, Micro-Partitioning®, and Partition Load Manager for AIX®.

PowerVM Editions is also available as a priced feature or upgrade named PowerVM Editions Enterprise. PowerVM Enterprise includes everything in the Standard edition plus the Partition Mobility function. Partition Mobility enables moving a stopped or running AIX or Linux client partition to any other actively running POWER7® server platform, including other PS703 or PS704 blade servers or other System p® platforms.

Another important part of the POWER7 architecture is the POWER Hypervisor™ (PHYP). The POWER Hypervisor is a layer of system firmware that enables the PowerVM Editions hardware feature. The POWER Hypervisor is always active, regardless of the system configuration. The POWER® hypervisor supports virtualization technologies, and logical partitioning for all operating systems that the PS703 or PS704 blade server supports.

This product information introduces PowerVM, but refers you to the PowerVM Information Roadmap for more information.

The System p PowerVM Editions Web site also offers resources for understanding and implementing a virtualization.
