Planning for firmware updates

Plan to install firmware updates for your blade server.

The PS703 or PS704 blade server uses an enhanced BMC with the same size firmware image as in the PS701 and PS702 blade servers.

The size of the firmware update makes it impractical to download and install over the RS485 bus of the management module. Therefore, a firmware update is not supported from the management module.

You can perform firmware updates using:
  • In-band operating system capabilities, such as update_flash for Linux or AIX®
  • The firmware update function of AIX in-band diagnostics
  • The firmware update function of the stand-alone Diagnostics CD

The IBM® Support site lists firmware updates that you can download. Installation instructions are included with the update.
