The IBM® i operating
system (formerly known as IBM i5/OS™) runs on the PS703 or PS704 blade
server as a Virtual I/O Server client
operating system running in a logical partition under the control
of the Integrated Virtualization Manager.
To plan for installing IBM i,
complete the following steps.
- Plan
for storage access.
The PS703 or PS704 blade
server has SAS storage hard disk drive
optional devices that you can install in the blade server. You can
also access external storage through an adapter card in the blade
server and an I/O switch module in the BladeCenter® unit. For example, you can
use a Fibre Channel adapter card in the blade server and a Fibre Channel
I/O switch in the BladeCenter unit
I/O module bay.
If you access external storage,
use System p-formatted disks instead of System i® disks, because the storage belongs
to Virtual I/O Server.
- Plan to use PowerVM®.
You must
install Virtual I/O Server and run IBM i
in a client logical partition.
See Planning for Virtual I/O Server for more information.
- Plan to use IVM to create a logical partition for IBM i.
After installing
Virtual I/O Server, use IVM Micro-Partitioning® to partition
the blade server. Partitioning creates logical partitions. You must
create a logical partition for IBM i.
See Planning for PowerVM Editions for more information.
- Plan to install IBM i.
See the IBM i on a POWER Blade Read-me First document
on the IBM website. Additional installation information and IBM i
restrictions are described in i5/OS client partition considerations.

Next step: Install Virtual
I/O Server.
