Monitor or video problems

Use this information to diagnose and resolve monitor or video errors.

IBM continually updates the support website with tips and techniques that you can use to resolve any problems that you might be having with the BladeCenter HX5 blade server. Go to the BladeCenter support search website and search for the terms http://www.ibm.com/search/csass/search?sn=mh&q=7872%20retain%20tip%20monitor&lang=en&cc=us&en=utf to see if any service bulletins have been generated.

Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem is solved.

The video monitor is a shared BladeCenter chassis resource. First, make sure that the video monitor is assigned to the blade server; then, see the following table and Solving shared BladeCenter resource problems.

  • See Parts listing - BladeCenter HX5 to determine which components are CRUs and which components are FRUs.
  • If an action step is preceded by "(Trained service technician only)," that step must be performed only by a trained service technician.
Symptom Action
The screen is blank.
  1. Check the function of the shared BladeCenter chassis resources (see Solving shared BladeCenter resource problems).
  2. Make sure that the blade server is turned on (see Turning on the blade server).
  3. Make sure that the monitor is connected correctly. See the documentation for your BladeCenter chassis for more information.
  4. Make sure that:
  5. (Trained service technician only) Replace the system-board assembly (see Removing the system-board assembly - BladeCenter HX5 and Installing the system-board assembly - BladeCenter HX5).
The monitor has screen jitter, or the screen image is wavy, unreadable, rolling, or distorted.
  1. Check the function of the shared BladeCenter chassis resources (see Solving shared BladeCenter resource problems).
  2. (Trained service technician only) Replace the system-board assembly (see Removing the system-board assembly - BladeCenter HX5 and Installing the system-board assembly - BladeCenter HX5).
Wrong characters appear on the screen.
  1. If the wrong language is displayed, update the firmware or operating system with the correct language in the blade server that has ownership of the monitor.
  2. Check the function of the shared BladeCenter chassis resources (see Solving shared BladeCenter resource problems).
  3. (Trained service technician only) Replace the system-board assembly (see Removing the system-board assembly - BladeCenter HX5 and Installing the system-board assembly - BladeCenter HX5).
