A managed system is a single physical PS703 or PS704 blade server and the BladeCenter® unit resources and blade resources that are connected to the physical server and managed by the physical server as a single unit. Connected BladeCenter unit resources can include I/O switch modules, for example, that are connected to storage area network (SAN) resources and that are assigned to the server.
You can install a single operating system on a managed PS703 or PS704 blade server and use the managed system as a single server. Alternately, you can install the Virtual I/O Server to use the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) console and the partitioning tool, Micro-Partitioning®, to create multiple logical partitions on the managed system. IVM manages the logical partitions on the managed PS703 or PS704 blade server with most of the same functionality as the Hardware Management Console (HMC), which manages virtual resources on other POWER5, POWER6®, and POWER7® platforms, but does not support blade servers.
